Kal Gajoum

Kal Gajoum is a Montreal-based contemporary artist, born in Tripoli, Lybia in 1968. His interest in art was sparked early in life when a family friend who was an artist introduced him to oil painting at the age of 10.

Kal moved to Paris in 1986 to study watercolor and the Parisian style of painting before eventually moving to Malta in 1993. For the next few years, he made a living restoring classic oil paintings at the Royal Fine Art Gallery while also selling his own aquarelles pieces. While experimenting with the palette knife, he would soon develop a taste for the techniques of the Dutch and Italian masters, such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Caravaggio.

In 2003 he established himself in Canada where he continues to actively create and push the boundaries of his technique. In his own words: “I use a wet-on-wet technique at the moment but I am still learning, and experimenting with new colors, my strokes could always evolve.”

 Kal Gajoum is one of Canada’s most successful and beloved artists. His instantly recognizable oil paint and palette knife technique sublimely balances intricate architectural detail with loose impressionist movement and light. Each of his paintings is filled with a lit-from-within glow and a level of precision and detail that is unimaginable. Kal Gajoum’s paintings are a true joy to experience and offer a level of classic beauty, elegance, and artistry that has proven itself timeless.
